You should not drink rainwater without treating it first, even if it falls right from the sky. Fresh rain starts clean as it forms in clouds. But it picks up pollutants on the way down through the air. By the time it reaches you, it can carry sulfur dioxide and fine dust from cars and factories.
Most of us caught raindrops on our tongues as kids and never gave it a second thought. A few drops won't make you sick in most cases. But is rainwater safe to drink as a regular water source? These bacteria point to fecal matter from birds and critters on your roof.
If you still want to drink rainwater, you need real filtration. A simple screen or cloth filter won't cut it. Look for systems with NSF/ANSI Standard 53 for contaminant removal. Standard 58 is for RO filters. Both marks prove your system can remove real threats from the water. A UV light stage kills bacteria and viruses that slip through the physical filters.
The full setup for safe drinking water from rain needs several parts. A first-flush device tosses the dirtiest water from the start of each rain. A sediment filter grabs particles. A carbon filter grabs chemicals. Then the UV light kills what's left alive. This kind of system runs $300 to $1,000 based on size and brand. That's a big cost for something your tap already does for pennies per gallon.
I tested a basic filtration setup on my barrel water out of interest. The taste was clean and soft, with no chlorine flavor at all. But the cost and upkeep of keeping that system running made tap water the smarter choice for drinking. I now use my barrel water where it does the most good. My garden and lawn love the soft, chlorine-free rain. My body gets the tested, treated water from the tap.
For most people, tap water from your local utility is the safest bet. They test for dozens of threats on a regular basis and adjust treatment as needed. Save your collected rain for outdoor use where plants benefit from its soft, natural makeup. You don't need to drink rainwater to enjoy its perks. Your garden gets it for free and your body stays safe with treated water instead.
