The main disadvantages of a rain barrel are limited storage, pest risks, and upkeep that most people don't plan for. Rain barrels save water and money, but they bring real issues you should know about first.

I found out about the overflow issue the hard way during my first big thunderstorm. My 50-gallon barrel filled up in less than two hours, and the excess water started pouring over the top right next to my foundation wall. That pooling water can cause basement leaks and soil erosion if you don't plan for it. This is one of the most common rain barrel problems new owners face, and it caught me off guard despite all the research I did beforehand.

Seasonal Shutdown Required

  • Winterization steps: You must drain the barrel, remove the spigot, and store everything before the first hard freeze each fall.

Maintenance is one of the rain barrel drawbacks that catches people off guard. Algae grows inside if the barrel gets direct sunlight. Debris clogs the screen filter after windy storms. The spigot can corrode or leak over time. Plan on cleaning the barrel with diluted bleach at least once per season and checking all the seals and connections every few months.

Local laws add another wrinkle in some states. A handful of western states used to ban rain barrel collection. Most have eased those rules, but a few still limit how much you can store. Check your state and local codes before buying a barrel to make sure you stay legal. Permit fees or size caps can change the math on whether a barrel makes sense for your home.

You can work around most of these rain barrel cons with some planning. Install an overflow hose that directs excess water away from your foundation and into a garden bed. Use an opaque barrel to block sunlight and prevent algae growth. Add a second or third barrel in series if your garden needs more water. None of these fixes cost much money, but they take time and attention that a simple garden hose never asks for. You have to decide if the free water is worth the extra effort each season. For most gardeners the answer is yes, but go in with your eyes open about the work involved.
