Is ZiZi an indoor plant?

The ZiZi indoor plant is one of the best houseplants you can grow in your home. You might also know it as the ZZ plant. This tough species handles low light, dry air, and skipped waterings better than most plants you'll find at the store.

Growing a zizi plant indoors works so well because your home copies its wild habitat. ZZ plants grew in the forests of eastern Africa under tall trees that blocked most sun. The forest floor had low light, poor soil, and long dry spells. Your living room with its filtered light and steady temps gives this ZiZi indoor plant exactly what it wants.

I've grown a ZiZi in my apartment for over a year now and it has outperformed every other plant in the same room. My pothos got leggy, the fern dropped half its fronds, and a peace lily refused to bloom in the low light near my north-facing window. The ZZ plant sat in that same spot and pushed out 5 new stems during the growing season without a single complaint. Its glossy leaves stayed dark green and firm the entire time.

The numbers confirm what my experience shows. UF/IFAS lists the ZZ for outdoor zones 10B through 12 only. That covers a tiny strip of southern Florida and Hawaii. Everyone else needs to grow it inside. NYBG says your plant does best at 70-85°F (21-29°C) and handles temps as low as 65°F (18°C) just fine.

Choose the Right Pot

  • Drainage is critical: Pick a pot with at least one drainage hole in the bottom so water doesn't pool around the rhizomes and cause rot.
  • Size matters: Start with a pot only 1-2 inches wider than the root ball since ZZ plants prefer snug containers over large empty ones.
  • Material choice: Terra cotta pots dry out faster than plastic, which helps prevent overwatering if you tend to water too often.

Find the Best Light Spot

  • Ideal location: Place your ZiZi 3-6 feet from an east or north-facing window for the bright indirect light it grows best under.
  • Low light works too: The plant survives in dim corners and rooms with only fluorescent lighting, though growth slows down a lot.
  • Avoid direct sun: Keep it out of harsh afternoon rays from south or west windows that can bleach and curl the leaves.

Water with Restraint

  • Less is more: Water only when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch, which works out to about every 7-14 days in most homes.
  • Seasonal adjustment: Cut watering back to every 2-3 weeks during fall and winter when the plant's growth slows to a near stop.
  • Rhizome safety: The underground rhizomes store water like a camel's hump, so your ZiZi handles drought far better than soggy soil.

Getting started with zz plant indoor growing takes about five minutes of setup. Pick a pot with drainage, fill it with a mix of regular potting soil and perlite, and place the plant in a spot with some indirect light. Water it when the soil dries and leave it alone the rest of the time. That's the whole routine.

The ZiZi earns its reputation as the perfect indoor plant for beginners and busy people. It won't punish you for forgetting to water it for two weeks. It won't die in a dim office corner. It won't need misting, special humidity trays, or grow lights to look good. Just give it a decent pot, some filtered light, and water when the soil goes dry. Your ZiZi will grow strong for years with almost no effort from you.
