Why is my cactus turning yellow or brown?

Cactus color changes indicate a stressed plant that warrants action. Yellowing typically indicates a case of sunburn, while brown spots suggest rot. If the cactus appears pale green, it may indicate a lack of light. My moon cactus became yellow after sudden exposure to the sun, and I learned to acclimate my plants more slowly. A proper diagnosis can save your cactus from permanent damage.

Yellowing Causes

  • Sudden exposure to intense direct sunlight
  • Chemical burn from improper fertilizer application
  • Temperature stress from cold drafts or heat waves

Browning Solutions

  • Remove rotten sections with sterilized tools
  • Repot in dry gritty soil after root trimming
  • Suspend watering until plant shows recovery signs

Treatments for sunburn will involve adjusting light exposure. Move the affected plants to areas with more shade right away. Use sheer curtains to filter the light for two weeks. Refer to your observations to adjust light exposure, limiting it to 15 extra minutes daily. My scorched prickly pear was fully recovered using this process, taking around three weeks.

Root rot must be addressed immediately, as it can cause significant damage to your plant before you take action. Gently unpot your plants and examine the roots. Using a pair of sterile scissors, trim off black, mushy roots and any other fungus. To work as a natural fungicide, sprinkle cinnamon powder on the cuts. Place the plant in arid, gritty soil when repotting. Do not water for 7-10 days after repotting to allow the plant to heal.

Discoloration can be avoided with sufficient good care practices. Gradually acclimate your plants to their new light environment over a period of 10 days. Water your plants only when the top of the soil feels completely dry to the touch. Observing your plants once every week allows you to catch early indications of stress and possible issues. My plants continue to flourish due to these preventive care initiatives.
