Getting a Dracaena bloom indoors is very rare and most owners never see it happen. These plants flower in the wild and in outdoor gardens but the conditions inside your home almost never trigger blooming. If you do get flowers consider yourself one of the lucky few.

People often ask do dragon trees flower at all. The answer is yes but with a big catch. NC State Extension describes the flowers as small, white, and tubular with a sweet scent. They show up in clusters along a long stalk that sprouts from the crown. The plant needs to reach a mature age before it can even produce flowers and most indoor plants never get old enough.

I have been growing Dracaena plants for over eight years now and I have never seen one bloom indoors. A friend in a plant group online posted photos of her outdoor Dracaena flowering after 12 years of growth. The whole group was shocked because most of us thought it would never happen. She lives in southern Florida where the plant stays outside year-round in warm humid air.

The reason dracaena flowers indoors are so rare comes down to light and temperature. Your home stays at a steady 68 to 72°F (20 to 22°C) all day and night. In the wild the temperature drops by 10°F (5.6°C) or more at night. That temperature swing between day and night signals the plant to put energy into flowers. Your thermostat removes that signal and the plant never gets the cue to bloom.

Outdoor Dracaena plants in USDA zones 10a through 12b have the best shot at blooming. These warm regions give the plant bright sun, high humidity, and those natural night-time temperature drops. If you live in one of these zones and grow your Dracaena outside you have a real chance of seeing flowers after several years of growth.

You can try to push your indoor plant toward blooming but set your hopes low. Give it the brightest indirect light you can find in your home. Place it near a window that gets sun for most of the day. In spring and fall you can let the room cool down at night by cracking a window to mimic that natural temperature drop.

Feed your plant with a balanced fertilizer during spring and summer to build up its energy stores. A mature plant with strong growth and plenty of stored energy has a better shot at flowering than a weak one. Make sure your Dracaena has been growing for at least 7 to 10 years before you expect any chance of blooms.

Even if your Dracaena never blooms it's still a gorgeous plant that adds life to your home. The tall trunk and crown of dark green leaves give you plenty of beauty without a single flower. Focus on keeping your plant healthy and growing strong. If flowers come one day they will be a wonderful surprise on top of a plant you already love.
