Encore Azalea size ranges from 2 to 5 feet tall (0.6 to 1.5 meters) based on the variety you pick. NC State Extension splits these shrubs into two groups: dwarf and intermediate. Each Encore Azalea size group fills a different role in your garden based on how much space you have to work with.
In my experience growing six dwarf encore azaleas in my front foundation beds, compact plants still put on a great show. My Autumn Coral plants sit at about 2.5 feet tall after three years in the ground. The Autumn Angel next to them reached 2.5 to 3 feet and stays round without much trimming. I tested these smaller types against the intermediate ones in my back yard and the dwarfs max out at about 3.5 feet (1 meter). They work great in tight spots where you need color without bulk.
The intermediate encore azaleas tell a different story in terms of scale. These varieties push up to 4 to 5 feet tall (1.2 to 1.5 meters) and spread about 3 to 4 feet wide. My Autumn Royalty sits in the back border at nearly 5 feet and towers over the dwarf types. I had to move it once because I planted it too close to a window. That mistake taught me to plan ahead with the bigger varieties.
Width matters just as much as height when you plan your spacing. Both dwarf and intermediate types spread 3 to 4 feet across at full maturity. Give each plant enough room so branches don't tangle and air flows between them. Crowded azaleas trap moisture and invite fungal problems you don't want to deal with later.
Autumn Coral (Dwarf)
- Mature height: Reaches 2 to 3 feet tall, making it one of the most compact Encore options for small gardens and border edges.
- Spread: Grows about 3 feet wide at maturity, forming a neat mound shape that looks great without heavy pruning work.
- Best use: Foundation plantings, low borders, and container gardens where space is limited but you still want three-season blooms.
Autumn Angel (Dwarf)
- Mature height: Grows to 2.5 to 3 feet tall with a dense branching habit that fills in gaps between taller shrubs.
- Spread: Reaches 3 to 3.5 feet wide and keeps a rounded form that needs minimal shaping throughout the year.
- Best use: Mass plantings and front-of-border spots where its pure white flowers brighten shaded areas.
Autumn Royalty (Intermediate)
- Mature height: Reaches 4 to 5 feet tall, which makes it a strong choice for privacy screens and back-of-border placement.
- Spread: Fills out to 3.5 to 4 feet wide with a more upright growth pattern compared to the dwarf mounding types.
- Best use: Background plantings, specimen focal points, and informal hedges where you want bold purple blooms at eye level.
The encore azalea height you end up with also depends on growing conditions. When I first planted my collection, I put the same variety in two different spots. The one in full sun with rich acidic soil reached 4 feet tall. The one across the yard in partial shade barely hit 3 feet even after the same amount of time. Soil quality and light make a big difference in the final size you get.
I once bought three Encore azaleas without reading the tags and ended up with two intermediates in a spot meant for dwarf plants. They outgrew the space within two years and I had to transplant them. Always check the mature Encore Azalea size on the plant tag before you buy.
Space your Encore azaleas 3 to 4 feet apart so each plant has room to fill out. That step keeps your plants healthier and saves you from digging them up later. A few minutes of planning at the garden center beats hours of rework in the yard.
