Prof. Samuel Fitzgerald, Ph.D.Neem oil against mosquitoes works thanks to its strong odor, similar to garlic, and the natural smell makes it less attractive to humans, which includes zones such as carbon dioxide and certain body odors. Mosquitoes fail to attack those they attack adequately. It can be applied to the skin diluted or to the edges of clothes. The duration of such effectiveness is about 6 hours, after which it should be reapplied.
Larval interruption is a foolproof anti-mosquito measure. A few teaspoons of neem oil in stagnant waters will form an oily film over the water's surface. This film will suffocate mosquito larvae in twenty-four hours. The oil acts by blocking the breathing tubes called siphons, which hinders their development before they emerge as adults. This method can be applied to bird baths, ponds, and drainage areas around the property.
Odor Masking
- Sulfur compounds: Overpower human scent signatures
- Receptor blockage: Confuses mosquito CO₂ detection
- Duration: Effective for 4-6 hours per application
Larval Elimination
- Surface tension: Creates suffocating oil films
- Growth disruption: Inhibits pupal development
- Application rate: 5mL per gallon of standing water
Synergistic Enhancements
- Citronella blends: Extend protection duration
- Essential oils: Improve skin tolerance
- Carrier lotions: Ensure even distribution
Formulations for Personal Protection need careful preparation. Mix one ounce of almond or coconut oil with ten drops of neem oil, and apply to pulse points and the edges of clothing. Please do not apply it to delicate fabrics, as it may cause staining. For children, use half-strength formulas. Patch tests must always be performed before using any product to any extent.
Warnings and limitations should be considered. Neem provides some protection against malaria-carrying species of Anopheles. However, it should be used in conjunction with other protection programs, such as covering the skin with clothing and using window and door screens. Do not apply to the eye areas or mucous membranes. Do not use near any aquatic life in natural waterways. Keep concentrates out of the reach of children and pets.
