Why are my sunflower leaves turning yellow?

When you see sunflower leaves turning yellow, you need to play detective. There are four main sunflower yellow leaves causes to check. Look for overwatering, low nitrogen, normal aging, or pests. Where the yellow shows up tells you what's wrong.

I spent a whole summer worried about yellow leaves before I learned to read the signs. My plants had yellow bottom leaves and I thought something was wrong. Turns out the plant was just moving nutrients up to make flowers. Once I knew the patterns, figuring out these problems got much easier for me.

Lower leaves yellow first when the plant sends energy to flower making. This is normal and nothing to fix. Your sunflower pulls nitrogen from old leaves to fuel new growth at the top. Those bottom leaves turn yellow, then brown, then fall off. It's just part of the plant's life cycle.

Low nitrogen causes a different pattern in your plant. This sunflower nutrient deficiency is easy to spot. Leaves turn yellow evenly all over the whole plant. The yellow starts at the bottom but spreads upward fast. New leaves come out pale instead of dark green. This tells you to feed your soil.

Overwatering makes leaves yellow and wilt at the same time. That seems backward since wilting usually means dry soil. But soggy roots can't take up water so leaves wilt even in wet ground. Check soil moisture before adding more water. Stick your finger 2 inches deep to test.

Pests cause yellow spots or patches rather than whole yellow leaves. Flip the leaves over and look for tiny bugs. Aphids cluster on stems and leaf backs. Spider mites leave tiny webs and speckled yellowing. Both suck sap from your plants and weaken them over time.

I once lost several plants to spider mites before I knew what to look for. The leaves had yellow speckles that spread from leaf to leaf. By the time I spotted the tiny webs it was almost too late. Now I check leaf backs every week when I water.

Test your soil if you think nutrients are the problem. A basic soil test from your extension office costs about $15. It tells you exactly what's missing. Most yellow leaf cases respond to balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer spread around the base of plants. Water it in well so roots can reach it.

For sunflower leaf problems caused by bugs, a strong spray of water knocks off aphids. Do this in the morning so leaves dry before night. Soap spray works on both aphids and spider mites. Spray every few days until you stop seeing bugs on your plants.

Don't panic when you see yellow leaves on your sunflowers. Check the pattern first to figure out the cause. Bottom leaves only usually means normal aging. Yellow all over points to nutrients or water issues. Spots and speckles suggest pests. Match the problem to the right fix and your plants will bounce back fast.
