How deep should bulbs be planted?

Bulbs should be planted at the proper depth to promote root growth and to provide some protection for extreme temperatures. The rule of thumb for planting bulbs is to plant them at a depth of three times their height. Planting bulbs at the proper depth prevents frost damage and allows the stems to push up efficiently.

Bulb Depth Guide by Type
Bulb SizeSmallExamplesCrocus, SnowdropsPlanting Depth
3-4 inches (7-10 cm)
Bulb SizeMediumExamplesTulips, HyacinthsPlanting Depth
6-8 inches (15-20 cm)
Bulb SizeLargeExamplesDaffodils, AlliumsPlanting Depth
6-8 inches (15-20 cm)

It's best to measure the height of your bulb accurately before planting. With oddly shaped bulbs, such as ranunculus, it's best to orient sideways to the top. Depth is more important than orientation, as roots grow naturally downward. Sandy soils - increase depth by 1 inch. Heavy clay - decrease depth by 1 inch.

Soil Type

  • Sandy soils: Increase depth 1 inch (2.5 cm)
  • Clay soils: Decrease depth 1 inch (2.5 cm)
  • Raised beds: Maintain standard depth
  • Containers: Use shallow planting for small bulbs
  • Sloped terrain: Plant deeper on inclines

Climate Considerations

  • Cold zones: Add 1 inch for extra insulation
  • Warm zones: Reduce depth to prevent overheating
  • High-wind areas: Plant deeper for stability
  • Wet regions: Shallow planting avoids rot
  • Dry climates: Deeper planting retains moisture

Use specialized tools for uniformity & consistency. A bulb planter creates similar holes, too. Mark the handles at typical depths for easy reminders. For bulk plantings, dig the beds to the desired depth and then plant. Properly space bulbs to avoid too dense plantings.

Use correct planting depth to avoid everyday issues like frost heave and weak stems. Bulbs planted too shallowly are easily frozen, while bulbs planted too deeply will struggle to emerge. Record your planting depths annually to improve your technique. The diligence pays off in spectacular tulip displays in spring.
